This is a collection of eighteen articles, four of which are new. The main subject is the origin of the article and the demise of the a.c.i. during the passage from Latin to the Romance languages. Both phenomena are explained with refernece to Montague Grammar. Other questions linked with the main subject are investigated: the connecting relative, the use of demonstrative pronouns in juridical and late Latin, the proleptic constructions of interrogative clauses and the development of the passive forms of the Romance verb. Both transformational and traditional grammar are drawn upon. In the last chapter the author considers the reflexive pronoun, to explain the a.c.i. construction, and the relevance of nominal cases for the use of pronouns and articles.
