Verkehrte Welten?

The essays in this volume on rituals of inversion from ancient times to the early modern period aim to critically examine and potentially question longstanding interpretive ideas about inversion and ‘upside-down’ worlds through familiar and previously unknown sources and to determine the range of this phenomenon. They disclose new perspectives on the phenomenon of inversion and challenge old assumptions.
