Vocational Rehabilitation and the European Community

This book, based on the proceedings of a conference organized by the Rehabilitation Resource Centre, looks at the impact of the European Community on the possible future direction of changes that are taking place in the employment field for disabled people in Europe, and the developments in vocational rehabilitation in the USA. Paul Cornes reviews the development of vocational rehabilitation services in Britain, and the contribution of research to their development. Donal McAnaney of University College, Dublin, looks at the goals of European union, and the possible opportunities that have arisen for promoting disabled peoples' rights. Tony Lumley, Secretary General of Mobility International, analyzes the European initiatives that came out of the 1981 UN Year for Disabled People and the continual problem of funding. Professor Frank Coffield of Durham University, looks at the role in Britain of Training and Enterprise Councils, and Paddy Waring of the Economic Community at the effect of EC legislation on rehabilitation and training for disabled people. Frederick E. Menz outlines the advances in Vocational Rehabilitation Research in the US. The papers all look at changes in the fast developing world of vocational rehabilitation in both Europe and America and, in particular, at the possible opportunities that they present for people with disabilities.
