For decades Richard Lichtheim, who was born in 1885, represented the interests of the Jewish national movement vis--vis the ruling powers of the time: during the First World War he was the representative of the Zionist organization in Constantinople, where he made a significant contribution to protecting the Yishuv, the Jewish settlement in Palestine, at. During the Holocaust he acted as an emissary for the Jewish Agency in Geneva, where he was one of the first to learn about the murder of European Jewry. He tirelessly tried to spread the word about the millions of murders and to organize help. At the same time, against the background of his diplomatic activities, Lichtheim's idea of Jewish self-determination in Palestine was updated: he changed from a convinced right-wing Zionist revisionist to a partisan of the left-liberal Aliya Hadasha. The source edition also provides insight into Lichtheim's diplomatic activities and the impact of this work on his conception of Zionism.
