Wallace and the Brigadier have been together now thirteen years, since the former was a puppy. They regularly discuss philosophical issues, such as the origins of the universe, the speed of light, life on other planets and other issues of importance to dog and man, as they walk in the beautiful South Northamptonshire countryside. The Brigadier decides on big issues, such as their overall route, and interprets the former's opinions on subjects to be discussed. Wallace has strong views on most things including the immediate direction of their walk. He has heard a lot about his predecessor, Wilson, who had been a handsome and well behaved Staffordshire Bull Terrier, but, in Wallace's view, a bit of a goody goody. His ashes are in a box in the study and led to a debate on Darwinism, DNA and the building blocks of life. Archie is the Brigadier's grandson, who joins them on several walks. Aged nine, he wants to be a racing driver or scientist. He asks pertinent questions about black holes and event horizons. On their walks together, he and Wallace disagree on the respective intelligence of men and dogs. Archie is concerned about the future of both, with global warming and burgeoning population levels; and whether there is enough food to feed the world today, let alone in the next century. The causes of fighting and wars are hotly debated. As Wallace and the Brigadier age, they face health threats and, in the not too distant future, to their turn to die. Who will go first? Will that finally end their relationship or will they meet again? What will happen to the one left behind? What is the meaning of life? Do dogs go to heaven? The book concludes with their views on these difficult questions.
