This is the fourth book in the Kenda Saga. This epic follows a young Japanese officer as he finds himself involved in combat during World War II. This is a story of how a naive and innocent young man faces death and the horrors of war. He must rely on his survival instincts and he must learn to do what he hates more than anything else. He must kill. He must become that which he despises. The inner conflict that consumes him also drives him. He knows that his country is the aggressor on a global scale. He wants to minimize the tragedies caused by his nation, but finds it frustrating. He is but a small cog in a huge and horrible machine. Yet, guided by the spirit of his ancestor, he finds a way to survive. He manages to grow and learns to play the political game necessary to affect a change. Through it all, he maintains his ethos; and strives to protect those that are harmed by his military's strategic goals. New Britain becomes the focal point of all the supplies and reinforcements that Japan can muster. The aircraft of the Imperial Navy battle it out; day after day with American and Australian fighter planes. Kenda finds a flaw in the American tactics and attempts to exploit it, but finds resistance from his own superiors along the way. Japan had many bases on New Britain for troops and ships and aircraft; and all had different names. But to all the men, on both sides,
