Rao, a physician in the Indian Army, a branch of the British Army fighting for the Allies in World War II, left his home for the war front. On his departure, his wife Susila, with their two children returned to her maternal home in Madras to live out the years of suspense, threats of bombing and constant fear for his safety. Within six months, he became a prisoner of the Japanese at the infamous Changi Prison.
