In the early 1800s, a young Ojibwe girl lived in the Michigan Territory of North America. This girl's name was Jane, and she was an extraordinary poet. Jane's Ojibwe name was Bamewawagezhikaquay. Bamewawagezhikaquay means "Woman of the Sound the Stars Make Rushing Through the Sky." In her early adolescence, Jane began to compose poems and traditional Ojibwe tales. Jane Johnston Schoolcraft is widely regarded as the first known Native American author and poet.
