In January 1999, five women were elected to the highest offices in Arizona, including governor, secretary of state,attorney general, treasurer, and superintendent of public instruction. The "Fab Five," as they were dubbed by the media, were sworn in by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, herself a former member of the Arizona legislature.
