Originally published in 1938, Women Servants of the State 18701938: A History of Women in the Civil Service tells the story of women as they became an integral part of the Civil Service, work previously reserved for men. As the functions of government widened and the activities of the Civil Service touched the lives of people in more ways, it was felt there were many opportunities for women, particularly in the health and care of women and children.
