Here Chan travels across the Pacific Ocean by steamer to San Francisco to assist his friend and former employer, the glamorous Madame Sally Jordan, who is falling on hard times. Jordan is forced to sell a valuable string of pearls to an eccentric millionaire, P.J. Madden, and has entrusted Chan, her old houseboy from the time of the monarchy, to bring them over safely from Hawaii.
