Frank "Lindy" Fancher was born May 19, 1919 in rural Hart County, Kentucky, the son of Ben Fancher a Tobacco farmer. In October of 1940, he enlisted in the 106th Cavalry Illinois National Guard and entered Federal Training on December 6th 1940. Thus began Lindy's military experience, one that would forever leave indelible memories of great sorrow and joy. This is the story of those experiences. It is a story for this generation and future ones that reminds us that freedom is not "free" and that this country was won through hardship and bloodshed. It is also a story of the transition from boyhood to manhood and how the war forever changed that.
