Young Adult

"i fumble for the silver keys

next to the brass ones for my apartment

(mama always preferred silver over gold)

and open the door

to nostalgia,

leave the phone off of the hook;

leave the future on hold."  

Young Adult is an ode to the transitional period between late teenage years and early adulthood. Although this time is wrought with awkward moments and difficult realizations, poet Kyra Gundred reminds us that there are lessons to be learned from both the joyful and painful experiences between life stages. Gundred searches for her identity in her work, while simultaneously offering refuge to a group between generations: the youngest millennials and oldest members of Generation Z.
