כשהחשיך הודלקו מספר מנורות צבעוניות

When it grew dark, a number of colored lamps were lighted

המלחים ומשפחת המלוכה רקדו בעליצות על הסיפון

the sailors and royal family danced merrily on the deck

בת הים הקטנה לא יכלה שלא לחשוב על יום הולדתה

The little mermaid could not help thinking of her birthday

היום שבו עלתה מהים בפעם הראשונה

the day that she rose out of the sea for the first time

חגיגות משמחות דומות נחגגו באותו יום

similar joyful festivities were celebrated on that day

היא חשבה על הפלא והתקווה שחשה באותו יום

she thought about the wonder and hope she felt that day

עם הזכרונות הנעימים האלה, גם היא הצטרפה לריקוד

with those pleasant memories, she too joined in the dance

על רגליה הכואבות, היא התמקמה באוויר

on her paining feet, she poised herself in the air

האופן שבו סנונית מתייצבת כשהיא רודפת אחרי טרף

the way a swallow poises itself when in pursued of prey

המלחים והמשרתים הריעו לה בפלא

the sailors and the servants cheered her wonderingly

היא מעולם לא רקדה בצורה כה חיננית לפני כן

She had never danced so gracefully before

רגליה הרכות הרגישו כאילו נחתכו בסכינים חדות

Her tender feet felt as if cut with sharp knives
