Carthage

In April of the year 146 BC, after three years of siege, the Roman army took Carthage by storm. The people of the city were massacred or enslaved and every single building was razed to the ground in a frenzy of total destruction: a cataclysm of calculated cruelty and enormous ferocity. The destruction of this, one of the greatest and most opulent cities of the ancient world was Rome's solution to the problem of Carthage, their final solution. For more than a hundred years only weeds grew where the city had once stood. Set against this background, Peter Huby's latest novel tells the interwined story of several very different lives; of men and women who become inescapably caught up in the destruction; in the hatred; the treachery and the cruelty. It is a chilling novel that resonates with man's inhumanity to man, in its exploration of this genocide of the ancient world and its impact on the lives of indiviuduals. Originally trained as a painter and printmaker, Peter Huby has written and directed several independent films as well as work for the theatre. His first novel Pasiphae was published in 2000. Carthage is his second novel.
