On October 3, 1990, the GDR disappeared from the political map. They were replaced by five new federal states, including the "Free State of Saxony", the creation of which led to bitter disputes in 1990. The federal and GDR governments, Saxony's partner states Baden-Wrttemberg and Bavaria, regional actors, old and new forces, but also the districts among themselves, vied for influence on state education. Michael Richter analyzes the history of this new federal state from a historical point of view and offers in a material-rich collection a detailed overview of the country education policy of this time. The hitherto unfamiliar perspective of a continuation of the conflicts of the peaceful revolution up to the autumn of German unity leads to a changed view of a transformation process that has crossed system boundaries and yet proceeded in a targeted manner in the sense of federal German orientations.
