Spring arrives on Lake Hubert, Minnesota, and Larry and Louise Loon return to their nest to welcome their new chicks into the world. The chicks bask in the sun, play hide and seek under the sailboat, and float along on the backs of Mama and Papa, safe from the dangers beyond their corner of the lake. Larry and Louise know who watches the little family; a predator by the name of Jody lurks in the skies above their peaceful summer home.
