This series facilitates the publication of books dealing with the theory and applications of smart material systems and controlled-structures technology. The following broad areas of research are addressed: active materials, adaptive optics, smart sensors and actuators, fibre-optic technology, adaptive and precision structures, and intelligent biomechanical and micromechanical structures. These papers were presented at the 5th Annual Smart Materials and Structures Workshop held in Blacksburg, Virginia, USA, in April 1992. They bring together the results of ten years of development in the area of optical sensing technology for application in smart materials and structures. A broad spectrum of subjects is covered: fibre senor fundamentals; techniques for the measurement of strain, temperature, vibration and degradation; the monitoring of material fabrication and in-service lifetime properties; special consideration of high-temperature materials. Actual and potential applications are wide-ranging. They include information retrieval from holograms; impact location in composites; in-situ strain fatigue sensing for aircraft, bridges and dams; internal strain sensors for accelerator magnets; high-temperature sensors; and composite cure monitoring.
