While we learn much about Cape Breton history and its rich culture from these accounts, we also learn much about the eclectic cast of characters-from explorers to entrepreneurs, settlers to surveyors, and military officers to travel writers-who wrote them, and about the attitudes of the times in which they wrote them.

First published in 1986, Impressions of Cape Breton has been extensively revised with a new introduction and the addition of three chapters, more illustrations and explanatory notes, and an updated bibliography.
