Max and Maurice appeared in October 1865 and is one of William Busch's early works. Many rhymes have become winged words in German. With this picture story William Busch also criticized the conditions of his time. At that time many parents emigrated to America because of their poverty and left their children behind, who then had to manage on their own. Often they did not go to school and had to steal to survive. The story was translated into over 300 languages and dialects. The first English translation by Charles Timothy Brooks appeared in 1871.
