The world lives in the shadow of the Forerunners, the greatest civilisation the Four Realms has ever known. They burrowed into the ground and built into the sky, but then they vanished in their prime and man entered a dark age that has never truly ended. Only when Kato defeated the ghouls did centuries of hardship come to a close. So when Dan is dismissed from the militia, it is at the worst of times: Forerunner ruins have been found and a madman is claiming to be the reincarnation of Kato, the hero who killed a god. As people watch to see if he will be captured, killed or become famous, Dan's warnings - of a village destroyed and of folk disappearing - fall on deaf ears. Soon he finds himself the centre of the culprit's attention and he is forced to abandon all that is dear to him. Yet as he runs for his life, he begins to understand why Kato's legacy is so dividing, why it is linked to the fall of an entire race - and why now, of all times, he is beginning to have dreams of a life he has never lived.
