Bayadsy here examines the social existence of Palestinian women in Israel, providing an extensive survey based on interviews dealing with the social dynamics of Palestinian society in Israel according to gender, age, and proximate residences, with a useful reference to the community's Bedouin segment. He focuses primarily on the social status of Palestinian women, a marginalized Muslim minority, as they seek supportive social services from the dominant Jewish Israeli government and the accompanying obstacles they face, not only from governmental interference but also from male influence within the Palestinian community. Through the use of related informational material he collected, Bayadsy explores the activities of NGOs based in Israel and abroad that have taken on the goal of representing the civil libertarian issues of Palestinian women. These organizational efforts are situated within the context of internationally recognized feminist guidelines embedded within a patriarchal society. The author concludes with a series of recommendations for NGOs to make their efforts more effective. This is a solid sociological contribution to understanding the structures that impact Palestinian women and their organizing efforts in Israel. Recommended.
