Starting from two premises, that texts are greater than the sum of their parts, and that text semantics and discourse traditions are closely linked, this study develops a linguistically based definition of semantic and discourse-traditional complexity and a model for analyzing it. This model is applied to a corpus of French short prose works to uncover patterns of complexity and connections between complexity and ambiguity.
