Still Falling North

Since I worked the 3 p.m. to midnight shift at the orphanage, I had the opportunity to do life with them in a more intimate, personal, and nurturing environment. Homework, dinner, psychological processing, and bedtime tuck-ins were each part of my everyday routine with the girls. Yet, just about every day I came into work, the day shift would share that one of our girls had run away again that morning. By God's grace, the girls would usually be located within hours. I'd tuck this sweet one into bed the following evening after she had been safely returned, and look far into her lost and deeply saddened eyes, saying, "Where were you running to? What were you running towards?" And without the slightest of hesitation or differentiation of reasons, she'd look up at me and share, "Nowhere. I was just running away from here."

Years later, I realized God had been having the same tender conversation with me; asking over and over again, why I was running away from Him. And even as I continued to wander and insist on my own path, He kept a careful, undeniable watch. It wasn't until one day that I stopped running, and started falling, that I realized just how good, safe, and fulfilling it was to be home, with Him. The running would be over, and my falling north had just begun.
