This study will start from the conclusion of the Franco-Russian entente, signalized by an ostentatious reception tendered to the French fleet at Kronstadt in 1891. This new association of France and Russia was a logical reaction to the Austro-German Alliance. Lonesome, saddened, wiser France found common ground with irritated and wary Russia. Each had in mind the possibility of an attack in the flank by Germany when committed to war with some other power. Its meaning was freedom of action in war for each party to the agreement; France could now engage England, or Russia could fight Austria or poach on Austria's Balkan reserves, with the assurance that German action would be check-mated by the partner to the Entente.
