Jean-Jacques Dessalines had taken up the mantle as the Commander of the Revolutionary Army after the death of his mentor, Toussaint Louverture. He masterfully assembled a mighty army of 40,000 men and women to defeat Napoleon's French army and declared Ayiti a free nation. Dessalines was joined by two other notable generals, also considered as founding fathers; Henry Christophe and Alexandre Pétion.The Bayard family deftly navigated their personal lives, business endeavors, and the ever-shifting political landscape as the years passed.
