Walking, Literature, and English Culture

This is a cultural history of walking in nineteenth-century England, assessing its importance in literature and in culture at large. Rereading Wordsworth in the context of contemporary changes in transport, agriculture, and aesthetics, Anne D. Wallace articulates a previously unacknowledged literary mode - pedestrianism. Besides Wordsworth, authors considered include Clare, Barrett Browning, Dickens, Hardy, and George Eliot.
