The three communities of Whickham, Swalwell and Dunston have separate identities, with their own histories and traditions. The communities have however shared similar experiences in terms of their industrial development and their social backgrounds. Farming and fisheries provided the main industry of the area before coal. Coal mining has played a huge part in the development of all three communities and connects their history. Coal mined in Whickham was brought to the surface in Swalwell whereas in Dunston the coal was stored before being transferred, by wagonway, to ships. And yet despite the similarities, the communities grew in distinct ways. Whickham itself developed as a residential area, while both Swalwell and Dunston became increasingly industry orientated. The skilled workforce employed in Crowley's Ironworks in Swalwell attracted other industries to the area. Industry in Dunston evolved as a result of the mining, and more particularly the movement, of coal. Over 200 photographs and other ephemera illustrate life here in the early years of the century. Much of the traditional industry, which has now disappeared from the area, is pictured. Many changes can be seen, such as the extensive housing development, which has blurred former community boundaries. The disappearing role of traditional shopping centres, clubs and pubs, as focal points for the three communities, is shown.
